Detox Ross Hockrow 1:22:00 FEATURE USA in World seelevelproductions@hotmail.com Detox is the story of young man named Eric. Eric passes the time indulging in various narcotics, with seemingly no direction for his life. That all changes when his older brother Ian comes to him with a plan to rob a huge crime lord and retrieve a mysterious envelope. As the story progresses Ian's plan is uncovered by those in charge and his ambition leads him to his eventual death. Now Eric seeks out the help of a close family friend in order to quickly sober up and serve up some justice to those responsible for his brothers' murder. The film takes us on a journey along side Eric as he dissects the organized crime world to find those responsible for his brothers murder. We learn that Eric's addictions never disappear, but that his desire for drugs has now merely been replaced by the desire to kill. Throughout the story is the ongoing question: What is in the envelope? Everyone involved seems to place a large amount of importance on it, except Eric; he cares only about making those who have wronged him pay. Can Eric succeed in his quest, or is the power of the envelope and those controlling it too much for a recovering drug addict to handle? One thing is for sure, Eric doesn't care about the odds being stacked against him, after all, they always have been.

History Matters Huda Abdul-Razzak 0:06:48 SHORT DOCUMENTARY USA in World huda9685@gmail.com During the winter of 2008, there was a 22-day war in Gaza initiated by the Israeli government, in which over 1300 Palestinians lost their lives and over 5000 were injured.  However, the coverage of the war in the US mainstream media drew much criticism, some claiming that it was heavily biased towards the Israeli government's perspective.  This short documentary analytically looks at the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as is represented in the mainstream media, and specifically the recent Gaza war that lasted from December 27, 2008 to January 18, 2009.  Was there a deliberate approach in the media to depict the event a certain way?  This question is explored as a part of the main premise and plot of History Matters, addressed by professors and graduate students in the University of Texas departments of Journalism, Government, and Radio, Television and Film.  Threaded throughout the documentary is a fictional story about a news anchor giving a report about Gaza when he is forced to confront a moral dilemma: he can either follow a scripted, but more biased portrayal of the recent events or take the risk to say what is on his mind.

I Covered My Eyes Paul Turano 0:29:00 SHORT DOCUMENTARY USA paulturano@gmail.com I Covered My Eyes investigates childhood notions of threat and safety by juxtaposing TV news broadcasts of tragic world events with home movie footage. The project was first conceived after seeing the televised images broadcast live on September 11 2001, and wondering what children must be feeling upon witnessing this horrific act within our own borders. By adopting a child's perspective, the film evokes the experience of learning about the outside world through news broadcasts, and the accompanying sense of threatened safety from forces outside the immediate family and community. As the sense of vulnerability grows throughout the film from abstract threats to more immediate and actual ones, the seemingly innocent and idyllic world of a childhood becomes overshadowed by an increasing awareness of its fragility and precariousness.

Kumbh Mela - Walking with the Nagas julienne rathore 0:40:12 SHORT DOCUMENTARY India juliennerathore@savagestudio.org The film Kumbh Mela - Walking with the Nagas focuses on the Kumbh Mela festival, which dates back to before Creation when the Hindu Gods and demons were fighting in the celestial skies. The focus lies upon the Naga Sadhus, one of eight families of Hindu holy men. Worshipping Shiva, these warrior ascetics are said to have remained the same since the prehistoric past. The Nagas are an extremely reclusive family who have denounced all worldly ties and focus on the enlightenment of the self as opposed to aiding the spiritual enlightenment of a greater society. The interaction between Naga Sadhus and the public is therefore usually limited to blessings offered to those who seek it humbly. At the Kumbh, the Naga Sadhus lead the processions to the riverbanks on the days of the big sacred baths. Starting at midnight, the night is a freezing 3¨_C, but the Nagas persist, marching for endless hours covered in no more than a thin layer of holy ash.

Who has not, a hundred times, found himself committing a vile or a silly action, for no other reason than because he knows he should not? Have we not a perpetual inclination, in the teeth of our best judgment, to violate that which is Law, merely because we understand it to be such? This spirit of perverseness, I say, came to my final overthrow. Maleldo Andrea Capranico 0:33:39 SHORT DOCUMENTARY Phillippines andreacapranico@libero.it During Holy Week, millions of people in the mainly Roman Catholic country of the Philippines celebrate the Passion of Christ in an almost unique way. During these days the roads turn red in blood due to the thousands of penitents who decide to flagellate themselves and, thus, to atone for their sins and those of their community. In the pinnacle of the processions someone gets to the point of being even nailed to the cross: Ruben Enage is one of them and after 22 years of crucifixions, he is still willing to sacrifice, as an extreme act of penance, faith, and compassion. In the meantime, while Ruben and many other faithful take their sacrifice very seriously, thousands of tourists and 'camera-toting gawkers' flock in and give the opportunity to commercial businesses of every kind to mushroom all over. They call it Maleldo (the 'beloved week'), and San Fernando Pampanga is one of the most important centres of these practices in the Philippines. This documentary aims at delving into the relationships between faith, culture, tradition and their misuse, trying to explore the components of one of the mostly debated religious events in the world.
Marathon Beirut, for the Love of Lebanon Deborah Harse 1:13:00 DOCUMENTARY Lebanon dh@deborahharse.com Marathon Beirut, for the Love of Lebanon is a film about the aftermath of the war in the summer of 2006, despite all the devastation and political upheavel, the Beirut Marathon Association chose not to cancel the event, but rather to carry on with it as a testament to the resilience of the Lebanese people. But just 5 days before the race, a government minister, Pierre Gemayel, was assassinated. After much deliberation, they decided again not to cancel, but to postpone the race by one week. Lebanon then went into three days of national mourning, which included a massive public demonstration in downtown Beirut as an expression of both grief and unity. When the mourning period ended the Beirut Marathon Association reactivated their plans and held a grand opening ceremony for the marathon expo festivities. But three days before the rescheduled marathon date, Hezbollah called for a rally in the central square in an effort to overthrow the government. There was concern that the demonstration might keep the Lebanese from coming out to participate in the marathon. But instead, it took place with 22,000 people, in solidarity, running or walking the 5 km, 10 km and 42 km races with 'For the Love of Lebanon' as the theme. The Beirut Marathon Association is not political. They are just very passionate and dedicated people who want to do something wonderful to lift up their country. And in 2007, with persistent instability, they continued to carry on.

Sub-Saharan Africa, home to two-thirds of the world's people living with HIV, women are even harder hit, making up 60 percent of those infected. Not only are women biologically more susceptible than men to HIV, many behavioral and social factors play into women's vulnerability. If a young woman is uninfected with HIV at the time of her marriage, traditional wisdom says that she has avoided the disease altogether. Sketches of Nothing by a Complete Nobody Bumdog Torres 2:35:00 UNDERGROUND USA bumdog@gmail.com Boldly done in the cinematic tradition of the American Independent Films of Kenneth Anger, Andy Warhol and John Cassevettes, in that Sketches of Nothing by a Complete Nobody is completely unwatchable. Here Bumdog also ranks alongside the likes of Ed Wood and Oscar Micheaux, whose movie accomplishments are marked not by any level of actual talent, but rather sheer determination and grit, to will an entire feature length film into existence. Sketches Of Nothing By A Complete Nobody is a film that will deliver on its title.

Umbrella Catherine Tyc 0:09:41 SHORT USA cat_tyc@hotmail.com Umbrella is a story about a woman who is about to have an abortion. The film is explores a deep symbolism, and is an adaptation of Fernando Sorrentino's short story There's A Man in the Habit of Hitting Me Over the Head with an Umbrella. The film maker draws off her friends' and her own experiences with wanting pregnancy, avoiding pregnancy, as well as her own feelings about pregnancy and children in general.  The film maker hopes to explore the subject of how an abortion affects two people through this film. The umbrella is a metaphor, not only for what an individual has to deal with when the prospect of parenthood arises but also for the hits that society deals to those who have abortions and to those who perform them. This film is less about how and why they should be safe and legal and more an attempt to explore how the current state of the economy as well as contemporary gender politics, adding even more complexity to an already complex situation heavily laden with the most deepest of intimacy, hormones and intense spiritual questioning.

It explores this question by investigating one of the most debated "what if" scenarios in the history of US foreign policy: What would President John F. Kennedy have done in Vietnam if he had not been assassinated in 1963, and had he been re-elected in 1964? The film employs what Harvard historian Niall Ferguson calls "virtual history," assessing the plausibility of counterfactuals, "what ifs"  and the outcomes they might have produced.
